The X6 has that trademark Nokia look, and feel

With a 16GB and 32GB version to choose from the Nokia X6 delivers choice straight off the shelf. The later version offers ComesWithMusic which is an online store with tons of tunes available for download. The device has been loaded with the Symbian S60 OS and has a 3.2 inch nHD touch screen. Nokia users will find the interface familiar and the X6 is capable of speedy web connections which support the browser and Social network integration. There is a full range of messaging options to utilise; with e-mail and IM both compatible.

The phone has that trademark Nokia look, and feel. The screen is not huge, but it is very bright and provides a focal point with its vibrant renditions of up to 16.7 million colours. The screen is capacitive which allows for multi touch control, this also means it is far more responsive than the resistive alternative. Nokia have made the X6 available in two colour variations, you can have either White with Blue detail or Black with Red detail, and both variations look good and compliment the devices muscular design. There is no doubt that the X6 is not a slim line device, though it is still only 13.8mm thick. It is however very palm friendly and at least you know the phone is in your pocket. As expected, Nokia have stuck with the Symbian S60 5th Edition. As standard you get an information packed home screen which can be customised to suite your needs. There a number of spaces to add shortcuts to you favourite contacts, a selection of customizable widgets live at the bottom of the screen, while you can attach live feeds for you e-mail, social networks or news channels. The interface is rich with application based content, including various Ovi Services which consist of a free e-mail service, sharing facilities, Ovi Maps and some online aspects with a store for downloading more apps. Nokia have loaded the X6 with tons of online features, including a full web browser. Thanks to the capacitive screen the zooming and scrolling functions can be controlled by more than one finger, and thanks to the built-in accelerometer you can flip the phone to landscape mode for an optimised browsing experience. The phone is fully integrated to handle social network accounts; it is compatible with multiple sites including Facebook and Twitter. As mentioned before, the X6 enables users to handle there e-mail inbox as well as hold live chat conversations with the IM client which is compatible with providers like Google Talk and WindowsLive. All of the online aspects on the phone are supported by the speedy connections provided by the 3G and Wi Fi technologies.

A very high tech camera system has been installed into the X6; a 5MP digital camera has been equipped with high spec Carl Zeiss optics, with it comes auto focus and digital zoom. A dual LED flash doubles as a scene light in video mode. The result is astonishing; the image quality is brilliant and photos can be edited with a number of tools. The video recorder on the phone captures 640 x 480p videos at up to 30fps, depending on conditions. There is also a camera on the front, which will capture videos up to 15fps at best. Where playback is concerned, the X6 has a very good music player which will comfortably handle a number of formats. The RealPlayer will also playback a ton of different file types with nHD videos possible. To wrap up, the device is equipped with various connection points with a 3.5mm jack for headphones and a microUSB slot for PC synch. The sharing facilities on the X6 allow you to upload content to the likes of YouTube and Facebook, while Bluetooth allows you to share content with compatible devices.

The Nokia X6 is a fully loaded device, delivering a very good user experience while supporting a number of multi media and online features. The camera is fantastic and the music player has album art and organization features to rival the best. Nokia have done a great job with the materials they had, though the interface may not be the best, the X6 gets the best out of it.

Are Carl Zeiss optics really that good?

I heard that they were the best, is that true?

Hoya and Essilor, amongst others, are equally good. There isn't a best. There are some that are definitely inferior however, particularly in regard to anti-reflection coatings.

Nokia Lumia 800 review: Bold design, blah camera (Albuquerque Journal)

(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)

It's been a couple of weeks now since we first glimpsed the Nokia Lumia 800,
one of the first two of Nokia's brave new Windows Phone world, just after it
was announced at Nokia World.

This phone had promise: a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED screen, a 1.4GHz processor, a
singular design in crazy bright blue and magenta colors, and a fancy
8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics, dual-LED flash, and 1080p HD
video capture.

Let me tell you, specs don't always pan out. I have few complaints with the
phone's interesting, gutsy design, but the camera quite frankly overpromised
and underdelivered. You can see some of the photos and comparison shots in
this gallery.

As for the rest, read all the pros and cons, and see photos and video in the
full Nokia Lumia 800 review.
