Eye Injuries At Work - Personal Protective Equipment Is The Key

Eye injuries at work affect one million people every year. Many of these injuries keep people from ever working in their chosen career again affecting their ability to care for their families. The eye is extremely fragile and thus susceptible to injury. We all need to protect ourselves by understanding ways to avoid injury.

Personal protective equipment is critical in avoiding eye injuries. Tinted glasses, standard safety glasses, eye-cup shields, safety goggles and face shields are all ways to avoid particles or light hitting and injuring the eye. Each of these pieces of equipment is made for a specific purpose. Finding the proper equipment for your job is imperative.

Eye strain is caused by poor lighting or excessive contrast of shadowing. Many times video display terminals are the cause. A high level of lighting in the office can overpower the monitor making it hard to read. A window or other object could cause a glare. Also, the incorrect prescription in your glasses or contacts could be a cause. Tinted glasses or an updated prescription can help immensely.

Contact lenses can also cause problems. They trap particles, dust or splashed chemicals and do not absorb chemicals or melt form sparks quickly. Sometimes avoiding contact lens use all together is part of a company policy.

Flying particles and splashing are a huge problem in some work places. Goggles with airflow vents or a face shield should be used in these work environments. Machinists and Welders are at a high risk for eye injuries. They need goggles and face shields with filter lenses and magnetic strips to catch particles. Workers in Laser Operations not only need goggles or glasses but also radiation filters.

Personal protective equipment maintenance is critical. The lenses need to be kept clean and replaced if scratched or cracked. Make sure you know the storage requirements of your eye wear and never misplace it. It is the most important protection in eye safety.

Don't be one of the the million workers injured with eye injuries every year. The seriousness of eye injuries cannot be overstated. Your eyes are your link to the world and imperative to maintaining your job and supporting your family in your chosen profession. Keep them safe with personal protective equipment.

Adidas buy Five Ten (Bike Radar)

Sports giants Adidas have signed a US$25 million deal to buy sticky soled
mountain bike shoe masters Five Ten. The acquisition, which is expected to be
completed within weeks, is part of the German company's move towards become a
"leading player" in the outdoor market.

Could this result in a range of Adidas-branded bike shoes to go with their
Evil Eye glasses and goggles? It's not clear at this stage. The deal will
certainly put more resources at Five Ten's disposal – Adidas employ 46,000
people worldwide, while Five Ten are a family-owned company with just 37 staff
– and an injection of Adidas style might help win them some new fans in their
core climbing and cycling markets.

According to a press release issued yesterday, Adidas intend to purchase all
of the issued share capital of Five Ten USA. The $25m purchase price includes
contingent payments, which are dependent on Five Ten achieving certain
performance measures over the next three years.

“We're very excited to join forces with Five Ten," said Rolf Reinschmidt,
senior vice president of Adidas's outdoor sports division. "Five Ten have
continuously been at the forefront of innovations and share the same ...
