A UK Electric Bed: Not Only for Hospitals—Now You Can Get One Too!

Many people in the UK think that an electric bed, a.k.a. an adjustable bed, is only for infirmaries and retirement homes. This is definitely a misconception. Electric beds are suitable for anyone looking for a better night’s rest. Let us examine the topic of electric adjustable beds to help you decide whether one is right for you.

An Adjustable Bed: Who Should Consider One and Why?

Electric beds have a segmented, motorized frame. A section of the frame can be moved up or down according to the comfort and/or medical needs of the occupant. An electric bed mattress can be softer or more firm, also depending on the sleeper’s inclination. Some people have to sleep in a specific position because of a medical condition. Or it could be that the occupant had a recent operation or sickness and must stay in bed a while. It's not necessary, though, to have a medical reason to sleep in an adjustable electric bed. People all over the country enjoy their adjustable beds because they're great for reading, watching TV or even using a laptop computer. The number one reason for higher sales of electric hospital beds is that more and more people are discovering how much improved is the quality of their sleep. In a fast-moving society, getting a full 8-hour rest can be a challenge. Isn’t it a good idea to choose a bed you can truly enjoy what sleep you can find?

Pluses of a Full Electric Hospital Bed

These beds are simple to reconfigure by simply using the remote control. The sections of the bed (there can be as many as five) adjust independently for a fully individualised configuration. Should you need to adjust it in the future, this poses no problem. Heat and massage are common amenities for adjustable beds. A key benefit of an electric or semi electric bed, however, is the degree to which it may help alleviate back pain. It is believed that roughly one half of those living within the UK will have to endure an aching back during the course of their lives. The reasons for backache are numerous - strain, vehicle~car} accidents, falls, diseases like arthritis and injuries such as lifting something heavy. Backaches are widespread and sometimes hard to handle.

For people in the UK who prefer not to take pain medication or undergo a complex surgical procedure, an electric bed often provides some relief.

Correct position for patient with leg edema with diagonosis of CHF?

My 87 year old father has congested heart failure with servere edema in his legs and feet.
We now have a semi-electric hospital bed here but the care taker is clueless about the proper position for of this bed. I think that the head and the feet should both be elevated. Is that correct and if so is there a recommended angle?
I would like to thank everybody for their answers! -:) Each one of them has something different and useful and I will try to incorporate them all into my father's care. I'll let the community choose the best answer since they are all very good IMO.

Salt restriction is priority! Many foods have naturally occurring salt. Fast food has an over abundance. Adding more water will just aggravate your fathers failing heart (ventricles) that can not pump adequately already. Besides cells of the body have demonstrated that if electrolytes are not balanced cells burst or so called "fresh water in the cells." There is something called the sodium potassium pump which regulates the interchange of cellular ions in each individual cell. (calcium, sodium, potassium and chloride etc.) This is probably a weeks worth of lecture in class. More important how is his overall nutrition? Low albumin or protein cam effect exchange of fluid at the cellular level - however properly functioning kidneys can have an effect as well. There are SO MANY FACTORS that influence fluid balance. Perhaps doc can order a dietitian to see? BACK to the bed - how about asking dad which position he feels comfortable in. Yes the feet should be raised but if raised to a degree he is uncomfortable he wont get any sleep that's not good either. If there is a textbook answer it might not be the right one for dad. If the angles of the bed are too confining it may be difficult too switch positions during the night leading to bed sores. Perhaps the correct answer is let dad put the bed up and down for his comfort. Orthopnea is a symptom caused by other diseases as well - asthma, emphysema etc.(web search it) could he have other conditions aggravating his breathing?
P.S. b vitamin complex can help cellular energy (web search please) but take on a different schedule than lasix or all will be lost in urine. Magnesium is a nutrient that is often lost in food processing. Studies have shown many americans are deficient is this nutrient. Years ago they did a study where they administered IV magnesium to heart attack patients to decrease abnormal rhythms of the heart.
P.P.S.If you are near a medical supply store perhaps a sheepskin (fake) or "eggcrate" underlay can prevent bedsores.
Best wishes and hoping your dad is well!
