Trocar Catheter: For Non-Operative Drainage of Fluid
Trocar catheter is an important medical device. Catheter is a tube, which can be inserted into a vessel, duct or body cavity. Catheters are primarily used for drainage, administration of gases or fluids, or to get access with the help of surgical instruments. The method of inserting a catheter inside the body is known as catheterization. Catheters are mainly of two types, soft catheters and hard catheters. A soft catheter is a thin and flexible tube and a hard catheter is larger and solid. A catheter, which is left inside the body, either permanently or temporarily, is known as an indwelling catheter. Moreover, a catheter that is permanently inserted inside the body is known as a permcath. A temporarily inserted catheter is known as an intermittent catheter.
Catheters were first created from reeds by ancient Syrians. The modern application of a catheter was introduced in 1868. The modern disposable catheter was invented by David S. Sheridan in the 1940s. He started and sold 4 catheter companies. He also invented the disposable plastic endotracheal tube, which is routinely used during surgical procedures. Before these inventions, health care professionals made the use of red rubber tubes. These tubes were then sterilized and re-used, which increased the risk of infection and spread of diseases.
A trocar catheter is a sterile and single use instrument, which consists of a clear PVC catheter and a surgically sharp trocar. This type of catheter is specially designed to address life threatening medical conditions, such as tension pneumothorax. This sharply pointed instrument is used to remove fluids, gas, empyema and semi-solids from hollow organs and body cavities. It is mainly used for rapid non-operative drainage of plueral and chest.
Trocar catheters are specially designed for safer intercostal insertion and placement. These catheters are surgically very sharp. The trocar tip of these catheters ensures controlled insertion. These catheters are made from clear polyvinyl chloride. The catheter fits perfectly over the trocar and facilitates placement. Some of the features of trocar catheters are:
-
Smooth conical distal tip, which allows safe and controlled intercostal penetration.
-
The protective cap largely reduces the risk of damage to body tissue.
-
Four offset eyes. These smooth finish drainage eyes facilitate easy flow of fluids and air.
-
Thermosensitive material used in these catheters softens with body temperature.
-
Transparent frosted polyvinyl chloride (latex free) allows clear visualization of draining fluid.
-
Depth marking for aiding correct tube placement.
-
Safety stop in cannula.
-
Tip-To-Toe radiopaque stripe.
-
Flat handle of a trocar catheter offers easy maneuverability and controlled insertion.
